Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects nearly one in five people in the United States, yet little is known about its causes or cures. IBS symptoms include gas, bloating, abdominal pain and/or cramping, diarrhea and constipation, fatigue, and mucus in the stool. Although few “serious” complications cause IBS patients to require surgery or lead to other serious diseases, the debilitating symptoms can drastically affect both lifestyle and emotional health of the patient.

The cause of IBS is not limited to one particular factor. Common contributors to IBS are stress and food allergies. Some doctors think that hormones play a key role in IBS because women are far more likely to develop IBS than men. However, none of these factors have been proven or disproven.

In BodyTalk, each person’s individuality is honored and acknowledged. No person is identical to another person in their body chemistry, in their personality, and in their ability to handle a particular situation. Therefore, IBS is treated individually and uniquely with each particular client.

BodyTalk - What it is?

BodyTalk in Detail

The body is a complex and amazing mechanism, with each of its systems, cells and atoms in constant communication. Unfortunately, the stresses of everyday life can compromise these lines of communications or overload the energy circuits. To address this, the BodyTalk System provides a simple and effective form of therapy that allows the body's systems to be re-synchronized so they can operate as nature intended - and effectively respond to injury and illness.

The BodyTalk System works by first identifying the weakened energy circuits within the body. The practitioner relies on the body's inherent knowledge of itself to locate the energy circuits that need repair by using a form of biofeedback, which is a subtle muscle-testing technique.

For every malfunctioning energy circuit found, the practitioner or client contacts the corresponding "points" with his or her hands. The practitioner then lightly taps the client on the top of the head, which stimulates the brain center and causes the brain to re-evaluate the state of the body's health. The result is that the general energy balance of the body is greatly improved.

The practitioner then taps the client on the sternum to "announce" the corrected energy flows to the rest of the body. This is beneficial because the heart is responsible for communicating the state of the body's health to the rest of the body. Stimulating the heart by tapping the sternum forces the heart to store the corrected energy patterns in the body's cellular memory. This means that the body will remember these changes after the treatment.

The BodyTalk treatment protocol is straightforward and requires no diagnoses. The practitioner relies on the guidance of the body's natural wisdom to not only locate the weakened lines of communication but also to find the proper order in which they are to be addressed.

Just as the body heals a wound with a particular sequence of chemical reactions, the body wants to address all healing in a certain order. This concept is paramount in the balancing process to initiate the body's ability to heal itself. The healing process usually follows rather quickly.

BodyTalk FAQ

I've never heard of BodyTalk. What is it?

BodyTalk is a relatively new form of complimentary medicine that acknowledges the innate wisdom within the body-mind complex. BodyTalk also acknowledges the body's ability to heal itself, given the right tools. By establishing a communication system of neuromuscular biofeedback, in which a series of “yes/no” questions are asked, the practitioner can call attention to areas of the body where communication has broken down and repair that communication by tapping on the head and on the heart.

How long has BodyTalk been around? Who invented it?

BodyTalk was created around 1997, so it's been growing for the last 10 years or so. It was first created by a man named John Veltheim, who was a doctor of chiropractic and Chinese Medicine from Australia. After recovering from a bad virus when someone tapped on his head, Dr. Veltheimemigrated to the United States and developed the BodyTalk system along with input from various professionals. He now lives in Florida and teaches BodyTalk internationally.

Why do you tap on the head and heart?

Tapping on the head calls the brain's attention to a specific part of the body. In essence, we're saying, “Brain, please pay attention to this, and re-establish the communication between this part and that part.”

When we tap on the sternum, the bone in the center of the chest area, we're asking the heart complex to store the change we just made when we tapped on the head.

So we're just connecting one thing to another?

Sometimes we're re-connecting communication pathways. Sometimes we're helping the body make shifts that the mind has already made. Sometimes we connect more than one thing, and the order is always important. Sometimes the body specifies a certain combination or order of things, like a mathematical formula. For instance, similar to the mathematical formula 3 + (4+7)/237, in which we do the parenthetical formula first, the body might come up with a formula such as Lungs linked to (Left Leg linked to Right Leg) defined by the emotion of anger.

What are the side effects?

There are no side effects. When your chief complaint is something chronic (like back pain that you've had for 3 years, for instance), you might feel better initially, then the pain may return before the follow-up treatment, and then be completely gone after the second or third treatment. But you won't have "side effects" like you would from a drug.

How will I feel afterwards?

That depends on you, and on what we do in a session. Some people feel very energized by a BodyTalk session. Some people feel really tired afterwards. Some people don't feel anything.

Since everyone is unique, and since everyone's treatment will be custom-tailored to what their body needs at that time, each BodyTalk session is very different. Some last 45 minutes. Some last 15 minutes. It depends on what changes your body is able to make in a given period of time. Sometimes people notice that their symptoms seem to get a little exaggerated after the first session, but improve dramatically after the follow-up. This can be attributed to underlying causes. Once the first session uncovers the "real" problem, that problem is exposed and can be completely alleviated when the body is ready to come back for the second treatment.

It usually takes about a week for the treatment to unfold, so if you don't feel anything immediately after the treatment, give yourself a little time.

Do I have to take off my clothes?

No, you can stay fully clothed during a treatment if you wish. However, it is recommended that you wear loose-fitting clothing and refrain from wearing underwire bras. Please take off jewelry, watches, and electronics (cell phones, pagers) before beginning your first session.

So what can BodyTalk actually do?

In addition to balancing energy meridians like Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine—and generally bringing balance to the body—BodyTalk can do some pretty interesting things. For instance, BodyTalk can restore communication between organs, between organs and endocrine glands, or between organs and body parts. A good example of this is when someone has a bad cough and they come in for a BodyTalk session, and then the link of “Spleen to Lungs” comes up. This link often stops cough and clears phlegm. Or if someone has had the stomach flu, usually there is a “Stomach to Large Intestine” link that comes up. This link often harmonizes the digestion and brings the appetite back.

Here are a few other things BodyTalk can do:

Cellular Repair—this can repair damage done to the body by acquired or inherited disease

Lymph—In BodyTalk, we can move lymph or enhance its circulation within the body

Blood Circulation—We can enhance blood circulation to, from, or within the body

Nerve Supply—Enhancing nerve supply to, from, or within the body

Environment—BodyTalk can balance you to various aspects of your environment that might be causing disharmony

Body Chemistry—BodyTalk can heal viruses, bacterial infections, allergies or intolerances

Emotions—BodyTalk works on many levels to balance our emotions, take the charge out of traumatic memories, and clear our fears and phobias

What are “Cortices”?

Cortices refers to the cortex of the brain, the outer layer that covers our whole head just below the skull. The cortex of the brain has to do with thinking, processing, evaluating, creating, and organizing. Divided by the corpus callosum, the left brain controls linear thought while the right brain does the creative thinking. Enhancing left and right brain communication helps us think and process more clearly.

“Cortices” is a technique in BodyTalk designed to enhance the communication between left and right brain. The practitioner contacts both sides of the client's head with one hand while tapping first on the top of the head and then on the sternum. Doing cortices also seems to have a great effect on insomnia, sleeplessness, ADD/ADHD symptoms, and brain fog. It focuses the mind and gives a general sense of well-being and calmness.

I have fibromyalgia. Does BodyTalk help with that?

BodyTalk has many applications, and can help with any problem or disease. BodyTalk does not diagnose or treat any illness. The practitioner relies on the guidance of the body's natural wisdom to locate the weakened lines of communication and find the proper order in which they are to be addressed.

Just as the body heals a wound with a particular sequence of chemical reactions, the body wants to address all healing in a certain order. This concept is important in the balancing process to initiate the body's ability to heal itself. The healing process usually follows rather quickly.

In my first BodyTalk session, it seemed like you were just lifting up my arm. How can that possibly tell you about my health?

The way that practitioners communicate with your innate wisdom is through a subtle form of muscle checking called neuromuscular biofeedback. The practitioner gently lifts up on your arm or hand after asking a question in her head. If the answer to that question is “no,” then there will be a certain degree of tension in the wrist. If the answer is “yes,” either the wrist will clearly break at the wrist crease or the hand will lift visibly from the body.

This is probably the hardest part of BodyTalk to understand and believe. However, if you (as the client) tune into your hand during a BodyTalk session, you'll feel the difference—without knowing what the practitioner is asking.

Remember, this is energy medicine. As such, we communicate with your body-mind complex on a deep level. We observe the changes that your body-mind is incorporating, and change happens as we observe it.

Is there somewhere we can go to read about BodyTalk?

The BodyTalk website (www.bodytalksystem.com) features articles about BodyTalk and a list of practitioners and seminars. The book, The BodyTalk System by John Veltheim, is another good resource.

BodyTalk General

What is BodyTalk?

BodyTalk is an amazing new healing modality designed to bring harmony and communication to the body.

Created by John Veltheim in the mid-1990s, BodyTalk is one of the newest forms of energy medicine. It is also the fastest growing health care system in the world.

BodyTalk acknowledges that within each of us is an innate wisdom that knows how to heal the body-mind complex. Everyone has experienced the body’s own healing power—when you get a cut, scrape, or burn, your body forms a scab, then a scar that soon covers the original wound. All this happens without much conscious effort from us—we don’t have to think about directing our white blood cells or lymph to a site of injury; the body does that of its own accord, much like the heart continues to beat and the lungs continue to breathe without any help from our conscious mind.

However, with continuous stress—whether it is emotional, physical, or mental—the body’s natural healing powers can become compromised. When this occurs, communication within the body breaks down. This is the root of disease in the body.

BodyTalk uses neuromuscular biofeedback to communicate directly with the body’s innate wisdom. The practitioner quite literally talks to the body and asks, “What is the priority?” allowing the body to guide the practitioner to the specific sites between which communication has been compromised and restore that communication by tapping gently on the head.

Why We Tap

Tapping on the head allows the brain to focus on and repair the link. Tapping gently interrupts the natural flow and rhythm of the nerves and cerebrospinal fluid, thus allowing the body to change its relationship with that organ, endocrine, or body part. It’s like pressing the “reset” button on your computer.

Tapping on the chest invites the heart to store the changes. The heart is the master organ of the body, and as such, will make the changes lasting and permanent.

End of Session

The body knows when it’s had enough. As the body’s innate wisdom guides the session, it becomes aware of exactly how many changes it can incorporate at a time. Some sessions last for 45 minutes to an hour. Other sessions contain only a few links and last 15 minutes. It just depends on the body and what it is capable of changing at that time.

BodyTalk and Allergies

In BodyTalk, allergies are just a small part of the overall balancing necessary to bring about improved health. As a holistic modality, BodyTalk does not treat the specific allergy; rather, BodyTalk treats the whole person who happens to experience an imbalance in their body chemistry resulting in allergies. This distinction is critical in understanding how surprising and seemingly magical results can be achieved through a few simple techniques without drugs, difficult avoidance diets, and painful treatments.

Technique.

For most BodyTalk treatments, allergies are addressed directly through body chemistry, which balances a particular substance that the body has determined is unsafe. For this form of balancing, the patient’s saliva sample is placed on the abdomen in conjunction with the allergen, and the head and chest are gently tapped. Tapping the head and chest are the hallmark of BodyTalk, and allergies are no different. Sometimes other links are called for in order to further balance the patient to that substance.

Alternatively, some allergies are balanced as a part of a completely different pair of links. In this case, the allergies are not treated directly through body chemistry; rather, they are treated as an orientation, lending a particular nuance to that link. An example of this would be spleen linking to Pancreatic Reflex point, oriented around walnut trees, in a patient who is sensitive to walnuts. Another example would be thyroid gland, specifically production of thyroxine, linking to pituitary gland, oriented around yellow squash, in a patient whose thyroid function is compromised by yellow squash. Although this particular form of treatment may not seem as direct, the body’s innate wisdom has identified the most efficient way to treat the allergy in order to bring about the fastest, safest, most effective way of treatment.

Categories.

In BodyTalk, allergies and intolerances are categorized according to type. Typical categories of allergies include, but are not limited to, ingestants, infectious agents, contactants, injectants, inhalants, fundamental substances, and internal substances. The categories are portal into the broad realm of possibility so that the practitioner can quickly and easily determine which allergies are of priority to the body. Thus the categories are a tool and are not meant to be used diagnostically.

Priority.

For the individual suffering from allergies, one of the most important concepts to understand in BodyTalk is the body’s priority. If someone is highly allergic to grass, for instance, grass would rarely be treated in the first session. The allergies are present because there exists a fundamental imbalance in that person’s immune system. Therefore, the body must be prepared, and the immune system normalized before the specific allergies are treated. In the same way that you would not wake up one morning and run a marathon without training for weeks and months, you would also not treat severe allergies on the initial treatment without first preparing the body. Sometimes the body will guide the practitioner to several links at the beginning of a session before allowing a body chemistry treatment of allergies. This occurs because the first links involve basic body communication that has broken down and must be repaired before the allergies can be treated.

Of all the treatment modalities, BodyTalk is the safest and most effective for treating allergies. This is due to its fundamental purpose of bringing balance and harmony to the body. We cannot change the world; however, we can come into harmony with it. BodyTalk uses this premise in the treatment of allergies in order to bring about lasting, permanent change.

BodyTalk and Migraines

For the 28 million people in the United States who suffer from migraine headaches every day, migraines are a debilitating affliction, costing millions in sick days, prescription drugs, and doctor visits. Although doctors commonly prescribe powerful painkillers in an attempt to alleviate migraines in their patients, they have failed to find a cure for them, and their treatments are palliative at best. The only “tried and true” treatment for a migraine is lying down in a dark cool room until it goes away.

Doctors do not know for sure what causes migraines, although they seem to agree that there may be several factors that contribute to them, such as:

Food allergies: such as nightshade vegetables, chocolate, caffeine

Hormones: changes in estrogen or progesterone levels

Stress: work, family, financial

Environmental factors: like changing barometric pressure or humidity

Pharmaceuticals: Many medications can cause migraines

Neurotransmitters: especially fluctuating Serotonin levels

Inhalants: like cigarette smoke or toxic fumes

Vigorous Exercise: extra-long workouts or intense training in heat

So the complicating factor in migraine headaches is that the cause of migraines in one person is probably slightly different than the cause in another person. No wonder a cure is yet to be found!

Since there can be many causes, and since each person has such an individual body chemistry makeup, the best treatment for migraines is BodyTalk. BodyTalk is a relatively new modality that honors the fact that we are all unique individuals, and that the cause of disease is essentially a breakdown of communication in the body from some type of stress—whether it is physical, as in the case of exercise; emotional, as in the case of work/family/financial stress; environmental, as in changing atmospheric conditions; or chemical, as in food allergies or inhalants causing a chemical reaction in our body.

In BodyTalk, the practitioner to establishes a neuromuscular biofeedback system--essentially a question-and-answer dialogue with the body. The practitioner follows a specific set of questions to determine where the problem is and how to repair it. BodyTalk is safe, non-invasive, can be performed while the client is fully clothed, and requires no pharmaceuticals or medication. Often, a series of treatments are required to alleviate the problem, but usually the client experiences significant improvement in their condition after the first visit.

In my experience, migraines usually involve several factors. Some of my patients work long hours and have significant work stress, which can be challenging to manage. However, there are several techniques in BodyTalk that can actually raise the threshold in the body’s ability to handle stress. This means the client can handle the stress better. We can never change the world, or our husband, or our boss, or our workload. However, we can change the way we react to it. BodyTalk has techniques that can effectively neutralize the way we experience the stressors in our lives that cause the migraines. Similarly, BodyTalk can neutralize our internal chemical reactions to allergens, effectively changing our relationship with them from a negative one to a positive one, even if that particular substance causing the disharmony is one of our hormones or neurotransmitters.

BodyTalk and Thyroid Disorders

The Thyroid Gland is one of the endocrine glands in the body, and is located in the lower third of the throat, above the clavicular notch. The thyroid gland is in charge of metabolism, which includes how much energy you have, how much sleep you need per night, how well you metabolize your food, and how much of that food is stored as fat. It also plays a role in fertility and sexual function. The thyroid functions in conjunction with the pituitary and the hypothalamus, located in the center of the brain. In Western Medicine, thyroid function is measured by a blood test determining levels of hormones. Cushing’s Syndrome, Hashimoto’s Hypothyroid, Grave’s Disease, DeQuervain’s (subacute thyroiditis), and goiter are some diagnoses for thyroid problems.

Hormones.

The thyroid gland produces several hormones, which, in turn, interact with hormones produced by the pituitary and hypothalamus. The thyroid secretes T3, T4, and Calcitonin, while the pituitary secretes TSH and the hypothalamus secretes TRH. These hormones interact with each other in the bloodstream via a negative feedback loop and control metabolism in the body. In addition, these hormones interact with other hormones and substances in the body, affecting growth, sexual function and bone health.

Thyroid Dysfunction.

Thyroid dysfunction falls into the category of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroid disorders are due to increased or excess production of T4 and T3. Symptoms include increased heart rate, insomnia, excess sweating, diarrhea, and weight loss. Hypothyroid disorders are due to the decreased production of T3 and T4, and result in weight gain, fatigue, sleeping for long periods of time, hair loss, and a feeling of cold in the body.

Etiology.

Little is known about the exact etiology of thyroid dysfunction. In some cases, the cause is autoimmune; in others, changes resulting from childbirth are implicated. However, newer theories are emerging, some pointing to diet and allergies, some pointing to genetically inherited conditions, and some involve deficiencies of vitamins and minerals.

Diagnosis.

Because thyroid hormones affect so many other systems in the body, thyroid dysfunction must be identified and addressed as soon as possible. Unfortunately, many blood tests are not sensitive enough to effectively diagnose a thyroid disorder until the patient’s condition has become severe enough to warrant medication. Many people in the “low-normal” hormonal range of a thyroid panel report debilitating symptoms, prompting further medical tests and exams, costing thousands of dollars. Others are dismissed or prescribed antidepressants or other drugs.

Thyroid Dysfunction and BodyTalk.

BodyTalk is a relatively new branch of energy medicine. A complete medicine unto itself, BodyTalk draws on the knowledge of many branches of medicine, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Craniosacral therapy, Psychology, Lymphatic Drainage, and Chiropractic, in addition to Western Medicine’s branches of neuroscience and psychoneuroimmunology. BodyTalk harnesses the body’s own innate wisdom through neuromuscular biofeedback to determine where the internal communication has broken down. Then it reestablishes the energetic circuits and stores the information, much like you would save a document on your computer.

In BodyTalk, the entire Body-Mind complex is addressed. Therefore, if the patient is experiencing thyroid dysfunction, it will be addressed in the specific order that the body’s natural wisdom determines it to be addressed in order to reestablish dysfunctional communication and bring about healing.

What this means is that if the particular patient is experiencing thyroid dysfunction because of a genetically inherited trait, then that is what will be addressed in the BodyTalk session. On the other hand, if the cause of the thyroid dysfunction has to do with a grain allergy, then that is what will be addressed. Other examples might be links to specific traumatic events, invigorating and enhancing blood or nerve circulation, or something seemingly unrelated, such as a link to a body part. Often, several preliminary links will be necessary before a link to or from the thyroid surfaces, because the body needs to be prepared before that specific repair is made. Occasionally, the thyroid will need to be addressed over the course of several treatments in order for functioning to be restored. However, given the alternative—a lifetime of pharmaceutical-modulated treatment, surgery—BodyTalk remains the most effective, efficient, economical, and safest alternative available.

Eczema is arguably one of the hardest conditions to treat with any modality. Eczema usually begins in infancy with the advent of solid foods, although occasionally it occurs in early childhood. Its onset typically reflects food allergies, but food allergies are seldom the entire problem. Often, inherited conditions from parents—including, but not limited to, fungi, parasites, viruses, and bacteria—are contributing causes.

In BodyTalk, we notice that the treatment of eczema often involves genetic factors, and that eczema often seems to be the result of allergic or reactive patterns inherited from parents or grandparents. Sometimes this goes so far as to reflect a parasitic, viral, or bacterial infection that was present in the patient’s parents that, paradoxically, is present but not active in the patient.

Certainly, food allergies are a contributing factor in eczema. Many eczema patients are reactive to grains and must adopt a grain-free or in the least a gluten-free diet for some part of the treatment in order to clear the eczema and treat the grain sensitivity. Other foods, such as nightshade vegetables, fruits (especially citrus), and dairy products may also cause sensitivity, but typically food allergies are patient specific.

Fungal infections, especially Candida, can play a major role in eczema. Some patients experience enormous relief after being treated for fungi, especially in conjunction with avoidance and treatment of grains, wheat, or bread combinations.

A unique aspect of BodyTalk allergy treatments is the category of fundamental substances, such as proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fats. Fundamental substances are building blocks of the body, and as such, are absorbed from food and used to nourish and build the body. When an imbalance with a specific fundamental substance exists, the body cannot absorb that nutrient, causing a deficiency. A common example is an imbalance with Calcium, which over a period of time creates a large deficiency, affecting the bones, as in osteoporosis. When fundamental substances are treated with BodyTalk, essentially harmonizing the relationship with that vitamin, mineral, protein, fat, or sugar, the body can absorb it, and the deficiency is addressed quite naturally with normal food intake.

In eczema, disharmony with fundamental substances vary from person to person. Common disharmonies could be with protein, calcium, Vitamin C, B Complex, Vitamin A, and sugar. Many times, the disharmony exists with more than one essential nutrient, and all must be treated.

The beauty of BodyTalk is that it takes the guesswork out of treatment. Since each person is unique biologically, treatment unfolds organically and specifically to that individual. The body’s innate wisdom guides the practitioner to the exact cause of the imbalance and corrects it in the specific order necessary to bring about healing and resolution of the particular disorder, regardless of the patient’s or the practitioner’s thoughts, opinions, or bias. Therefore, whether the practitioner has treated many cases of eczema caused by food sensitivities or deficiencies or infectious agents—whether that practitioner thinks he or she knows the exact cause of the problem or not—the patient’s body will guide the treatment toward the specific links that will resolve the problem. That objectivity avoids costly redundant or unnecessary treatments and increases efficiency of treatment, bringing faster, safer results.

BodyTalk and Energy

The BodyTalk SystemTM is an astonishingly simple and effective form of energy medicine that balances and synchronizes all the systems of the body. You can enjoy better health and well-being with BodyTalk by visiting a Certified BodyTalk Practitioner (CBP) for a treatment session, or by learning simple techniques that you can use anywhere, anytime, to help yourself, your family and friends by taking the BodyTalk AccessTM Class.

The BodyTalk System has become the fastest growing healthcare system in the world because:

BodyTalk is totally safe. Practitioners use a light tapping technique to help the brain restore compromised communication circuits within the body, restoring the body's innate ability to heal itself. There are no medications prescribed, and no invasive techniques imposed upon the body.

BodyTalk honors each individual's uniqueness. Everyone is unique, and every BodyTalk session will be unique. BodyTalk does not use diagnostic labels, or teach certain protocols for specific illnesses. The innate wisdom of the client's body itself guides the practitioner using neuromuscular biofeedback to identify which systems need to be brought into better communication, functioning and synchronization. Thus balancing procedures are revealed in the proper sequence tailored exactly to the individual's priorities at that point in time.

BodyTalk is truly Holistic. The BodyTalk protocol is like a map of the entire Body-Mind complex, including physical systems such as the brain, nerves, organs, endocrine glands, muscles and bones, energetic systems such as acupuncture meridians and chakras, and mental systems such as limiting beliefs, traumatic memories or imbalanced emotional patterns. Practitioners navigate the protocol chart using biofeedback to identify whether imbalances in the physical, emotional, mental or spiritual domains (or all four areas) need to be synchronized and harmonized.

BodyTalk is Comprehensive. The BodyTalk protocol is the most comprehensive protocol available in any system anywhere. It combines insights from quantum physics and neuroscience, the wisdom of yoga philosophy, sophisticated energetic understanding of Chinese medicine, the clinical findings of applied kinesiology and the simplicity and effectiveness of energy psychology. The BodyTalk protocol is the basis of the extraordinary results and health miracles that practitioners witness daily.

BodyTalk is effective. Many people experience marked improvements in their health with BodyTalk, frequently after trying many other practitioners and systems without success. Clinical experience has shown that when the bodymind complex is returned to optimal functioning, the body can heal itself in amazing ways. Some of the health issues that regularly respond to BodyTalk treatment include headaches, migraines, learning disorders, pain syndromes, endocrine imbalances, digestive disorders, eating disorders, addictions, allergies, accumulated toxins, viruses and infections, traumatic memories, PTSD, fears and phobias, etc.

BodyTalk is Fast. Some clients experience a major and immediate shift after a single session! Others who receive regular BodyTalk sessions report a steady overall improvement in all aspects of their health: physical, emotional and spiritual.

BodyTalk is Relaxing. Generally, clients feel more relaxed with a general overall sense of well-being after their BodyTalk sessions.

BodyTalk is Easy to Learn. The BodyTalk techniques are simple enough to be leaned and applied as a home health-care support system with no prior health care knowledge. BodyTalk is powerful and comprehensive enough to be used as a stand-alone system to treat many health problems, or seamlessly integrated into any health care system to increase its effectiveness and promote faster healing.

From Frustration to Hope

From Frustration to Hope: How BodyTalk and The Family Hope Center are helping kids find possibilities for healing
By Ruth Vincent

Kevin is a normal, happy kid. Grinning broadly with dimpled cheeks, he talks excitedly about his favorite baseball teams and how his own game is improving. He's very articulate for his age, and does well in school. He's friendly with a mischievous sense of humor. He doesn't seem like a child who is brain injured.

"Our first step is getting parents to shift their paradigm that healing is possible for their neurologically injured child," says Mathew Newell, director of The Family Hope Center, an international organization based in Bluebell Pennsylvania which treats children and adults with neurological problems such Autism to Cerebral Palsy from Mental Retardation to Epilepsy to Attention Deficit Disorder and many other diagnoses. "In most cases these families have been given a label, a diagnosis or syndrome, for their child and have been told by the medical community that their child will never live a normal life. So before we even begin treatment, we shift that paradigm; that healing, even complete recovery, is possible for the child."

What makes The Family Hope Center unique is the comprehensiveness of their approach, and that they integrate BodyTalk into the work they do. The Center is a team led by husband and wife Mathew and Carol Newell, who both have a background in occupational therapy. The core team includes Matthew, Carol, an on-staff physician, and a nutritionist. They also offer cutting-edge therapies such as cranial sacral, myofascial release, a hyperbaric chamber, and most recently, BodyTalk.

The Family Hope Center was already seeing good results with their program of neural development, cranial sacral therapy, and nutrition, however, director Mathew Newell felt like there was still a missing piece. It was then that he learned BodyTalk from Karen Atkins at The BodyTalk Center in New York City. "BodyTalk has given us deeper insights," says Mathew. "It helps us to zero in on what is the top priority to address."

Many of the families who bring their child for treatment at The Family Hope Center have no previous experience with alternative healthcare modalities like BodyTalk. But they come to appreciate its benefits. When ten-year old Kevin is asked about his BodyTalk sessions, he replies, "At first, I thought it was weird," he laughs. "But it gives me more energy." Bruce Kirk, Kevin's father, explains. "There are so many different modalities you can use. We went to a lot of specialists with our son, and it was like they were all looking at him through a microscope; they couldn't see the whole picture. The great thing about BodyTalk is that it's a tool that lets you take a broader perspective on things."

BodyTalk helps The Family Hope Center shift the perspective from the injury in the brain, to the whole person, and work with their whole mindbody. Within the BodyTalk protocol, staff identify what therapies would be best for the individual child; it can also help create overall balance in the body so that clients are more receptive to treatment. In severe or dire situations, BodyTalk is often the go to treatment, since the child may not be responding to other methods.

Kevin Kirk's particular story may be unique, however, his family's experience of frustration and getting nowhere with the conventional healthcare system is sadly familiar to many families whose child was given a neurological diagnosis.

Kevin, now 10, had a brain tumor when he was 5. He had surgery to remove the tumor, however, there was bleeding into his brain. "Kevin came out of the surgery severely impacted," says Bruce Kirk. "He could no longer walk or sit up. He had trouble processing information. And he wasn't developing like his peers, physically or mentally."

For the next four years, Kevin's parents took him from doctor to doctor trying to recover some of what had been lost. "We followed the main stream medical route at first and went through countless episodes of physical therapy and occupational therapy and speech therapy." But the treatments weren't helping. "I had a physical therapist tell me that where he was in terms of his cognitive and motor function was basically where he was going to be for the rest of his life and we should just stop coming to physical therapy, because it wasn't going to do him any good. But we decided not to give up."

That's when the Kirk family discovered The Family Hope Center. "I had been on the phone with them for just a couple of minutes and I realized immediately that their approach was fundamentally different from what I had experienced for the last painful four and half years."

The Family Hope Center's program is designed to replicate the natural development of the brain. Ten year old Kevin describes it best, "The program involves what babies do in stages..." A baby's brain develops one area at a time, starting with the oldest parts of the brain, the medulla oblongata and the pons, responsible for basic body processes and motor skills, and then develops the limbic and cortex layers of the brain, responsible for emotions and higher intellectual thinking. This is mirrored in a baby's progress from being able to focus their eyes to crawling, to creeping, to learning how to walk and learning how to talk.

But what if this developmental process hasn't happened for a child, or what if it's been interrupted? What if a child can't see or can't hear, can't walk, or talk, or read? "The conventional medical approach," says Newell "would be to give that child a label which describes the range and severity of their symptoms, such as "Autism," "Cerebral Palsy," "Blindness," or "ADD". But these diagnoses, and many others, are all labels, and syndromes, that are symptoms of the brain not functioning at its optimal capacity."

"The brain grows by use," explains Newell. "The conventional approach is, if your child can't walk, don't frustrate them by trying to make them walk, just put them in a wheel chair. But there's no way to graduate from a wheel chair. We get kids to crawl on their belly, and then creep on their hands and knees. Then they progress to walking. The brain is not a static organ. It is capable of growing and building new neural pathways. But the brain grows in response to stimulus. You have to target the affected areas of the brain with stimulation, and then it will grow." Nutrition also plays a huge role in The Family Hope Center's program. "Most people don't know that the gut produces fifty percent of the neurotransmitters for the brain," says Newell. "We get parents to understand how important nutrition is for healing their child."

The Family Hope Center sees the child's family as the greatest asset in their recovery. " The family, because of their intense love for their child and natural motivation to help them, can, with the proper training and support, become the best therapists for their brain-injured child," says Matthew. The parents of every child treated at The Family Hope Center are asked to take a three-day seminar in which they learn about the brain and are taught the different therapies they can use with their child at home. "We spend several hours a day doing the program with Kevin," says his father, "but it's time well spent."

The Family Hope Center believes that it's imperative to support the parents as well as the hurt child. It's not only the children being treated at The Family Hope Center who receive BodyTalk sessions. Their parents are frequently given BodyTalk sessions as well. It provides them with a valuable tool for their own physical and emotional health and can alleviate the pent up stress of caring for a neurologically injured child.

The Kirk family is extremely happy with the results they've seen after just seven months of treatment at The Family Hope Center. "We had a follow up visit with one of Kevin's pediatricians," says Bruce. "She hadn't seen him since he started treatment here and she was stunned, just flabbergasted, by how well he's doing."

When asked what changes he has noticed in himself, Kevin replies, "I think my energy has improved. I'm more active than I used to be. I used to always stay in the house in a lounge chair playing Play Station. Now I'm working out, doing the program. And I'm doing better with my reading and writing. Before my language tests were like 65%, now they're like 90%."

"He's happier, too" his dad adds. Kevin grins.

His father confides when Kevin is out of the room, "the biggest change we've seen in Kevin is that now he has hope. I know it sounds clich, but truly he's hopeful now, and before he wasn't. He had given up. Now he has hope and he didn't have hope before. That's huge. He loves baseball, and before the treatment he couldn't hit or catch a ball because of his neurological impairments. Now he's playing baseball, and he's seeing his batting average improve. He's noticed the improvement in his cognitive ability. He's noticed that now he's able to process information faster. And I think it's almost more important that he sees his improvement as that we, his parents, see it."
